My simple pleasure.
The Simple Joy of Hanging Clothes on the Line
It is unanimous! The subscribers to Rustic Roots & Simple Living have voted, and baking is their favorite simple pleasure. I also love to bake! However, if I had to pick just one simple living pleasure that I enjoy the most in the summer, it would be hanging clothes on the clothesline.
There's something incredibly relaxing about this task for me. I love the fresh scent of sheets dried in the open air and the feeling of crisp, sun-dried fabric when I take them out of the chest to make the bed. This summer, having a clothesline at home has been a delightful addition, especially after living in a camper last summer without one.
One of the things I enjoy most about this simple pleasure is using the old-style round wooden clothespins. While the wooden spring clothespins work well, they often pop off the line when the wind blows. The round wooden ones, in my experience, stay on the line better. The only drawback is that they can't hang super thick items, so I keep a few of the larger wooden spring ones around for that purpose and for hanging socks.
Embracing a Plastic-Free Lifestyle
In my journey towards simple living, I’ve been making conscious choices to avoid plastic in my daily life. Choosing products made from natural materials not only aligns with my aesthetic but also supports a more sustainable lifestyle. Links to the items I use are found at the bottom of this page. Here are some ways I’ve incorporated this philosophy into my laundry routine:
1. Clothespins:
Round Wooden Clothespins: These are sturdy and have a timeless charm.
Wooden Spring Clothespins: Handy for thicker items and socks.
2. Accessories:
Clothespin Bag: I opted for a fabric clothespin bag to keep my clothespins organized and within reach.
Wicker Laundry Baskets: These are not only functional but also add a rustic touch to my laundry routine.
3. Avoiding Plastic:
Wherever possible, I choose items that are free from plastic. This includes opting for wooden or metal alternatives over plastic ones. For instance, my clothespin bag is made from durable fabric instead of plastic, and my wicker baskets are a natural alternative to plastic laundry bins.
Tips for a Perfect Clothesline Setup
1. Choose the Right Clothespins:
Round Wooden Clothespins: Ideal for most items as they stay on the line better.
Wooden Spring Clothespins: Useful for thicker items and socks.
2. Invest in Quality Accessories:
Clothespin Bag: Keeps your clothespins handy and organized.
Wicker Laundry Baskets: Adds a touch of rustic charm and functionality.
3. Find the Perfect Spot:
Choose a sunny, breezy location for your clothesline to maximize drying efficiency.
4. Enjoy the Process:
Take your time hanging each item and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. It's a meditative and relaxing activity that connects you with nature.
Hanging clothes on the line is more than just a chore; it's a simple living pleasure that brings me immense joy. If you haven’t tried it yet, I highly recommend giving it a go. There’s nothing quite like the scent and feel of sun-dried laundry.
Happy hanging!
