One of the boys!
I have 4 dogs (the boys). Two are welcome in the house, while the other two are my husband's hunting dogs. We go through a lot of dog biscuits and tend to buy them in the biggest box we can find. One day, I happened to wonder what exactly was in the treats we give the boys. I was shocked to see a very long list of ingredients. I thought I could surely make something that was better for them and probably tastier.
After some trial and error, the Oatmeal PB dog treats were a hit! I make them regularly now. If I already have the oven on for something else I'm baking, I just mix up a batch. You can easily mix it up in a food processor. The boys can smell them cooking and hang around the kitchen until they can get one.
They are good people treats too!
This weekend, I had the oven going for bread and a special little helper over for a visit who wanted to bake, so we mixed up a batch.
Recipe: Oatmeal PB Dog Treats
Ingredients:
1 heaping cup of oatmeal
1 heaping tablespoon of peanut butter (I use natural, no sugar)
1 ripe banana
1 teaspoon of honey
Instructions:
Grind the Oatmeal: Grind the oatmeal to a chunky flour consistency in a food processor. (This is a personal choice. The finer the grind, the less chunky the treat will be.)
Mix Ingredients: Add the rest of the ingredients and blend in the food processor. It will form a ball. If it is too sticky to roll out, add more oats.
Prepare the Dough: Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and press or roll out to your desired thickness.
Cut Out Shapes: Cut out with your favorite doggy cookie cutter (the one I use is in the link below) and pop them in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 25 minutes. The longer you bake them, the crisper the treats will be.

Variation:
I have also used canned pumpkin instead of banana. You will just have to adjust the amount of ground oats.

The boys love these treats, and I feel better knowing exactly what’s in them. Plus, they are so easy to make! Next time you have the oven on, give this recipe a try. Your furry friends will thank you!
Ready to be snapped up by good boys!
Happy baking! Let me know how yours come out or drop me note if you have a variation that you good dogs love.
