DIY Wood Conditioner - Wood Glow
As I progress along my journey toward a more simple life, I've been thinking a lot about the products I use to clean. Being a chemistry teacher, even I don't know what some of the chemicals in commercial cleaning products are! As I slow down and really consider the products I'm using around my family, I began to research ingredients that I was more familiar with and to utilize my chemistry background.
This is the first in a series of posts where I will share what I have found to be effective cleaning products that can be made from ingredients most of us have in our pantry. If you don't have the ingredients, I will link to where you can purchase them at the bottom of the page.
The first one I want to share is a wood conditioner that I call Wood Glow. It is very easy to make and can be used on unsealed wood, such as cutting boards, wood utensils, butcher block, etc. I noticed my cutting boards were looking dry and needed some attention. My wooden spoons were looking pretty rough too. I have also used this on my coffee table, which is an antique chicken incubator. It was looking very dry, and the wood conditioner just soaked in and gave it a lovely soft glow.
Three simple ingredients.
Recipe: Wood Glow Conditioner
Ingredients:
2 tablespoons beeswax pellets
6 tablespoons coconut oil, sunflower oil, or mineral oil (I prefer coconut oil)
15-20 drops of your favorite essential oil (optional, I use orange)
Wood Glow cooling
Instructions:
Melt the Beeswax: In a double boiler, melt the beeswax pellets with the oil.
Add Essential Oil: Once melted, add your essential oil if using.
Pour and Cool: Pour the mixture into a 6-8 ounce jar and let it cool completely.
Store: Once cool, cover the jar with a tight-sealing lid.
Apply with a soft cloth.
Usage:
Apply: When ready to use, take a soft cloth and rub the conditioner into cutting boards, wooden tools, or any unsealed wood surface.
Let Sit: Let the conditioner sit for a couple of hours.
Wipe Off: Wipe off any excess. If the wood is very dry, it may absorb all the conditioner, and there will be nothing to wipe off.
I absolutely love this wood conditioner! It’s natural, easy to make, and brings a beautiful glow to all my wooden items. Not to mention, it smells fantastic if you add essential oils.
Benefits of DIY Wood Conditioner:
Natural Ingredients: Made from familiar, natural ingredients.
Cost-Effective: Much cheaper than commercial products.
Customizable: Add your favorite essential oils for a personalized scent.
Effective: Works wonders on dry, unsealed wood.
I hope you give this DIY wood conditioner a try and enjoy the results as much as I do. Stay tuned for more homemade cleaning product recipes in my upcoming posts.
Finishing off my old jar of Wood Glow.
