Magnesium Butter

If you've been looking for a natural way to unwind at the end of the day and rest those tired dogs, homemade magnesium butter might just be your new favorite ritual. As a teacher I’m on my feet all day so I always look for ways to revive my poor abused feet. Not only does it nourish and soften the skin, but it also delivers the calming benefits of magnesium directly through the soles of your feet. Let’s dive into why this is such a beneficial practice and how you can make your own magnesium butter at home.

Why Magnesium Butter for the Feet?

Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a role in over 300 biochemical reactions in the body. Despite its importance, many people have magnesium deficiencies due to dietary gaps or stress. Applying magnesium topically has been suggested as a simple and effective way to boost levels. Obviously, I am not a doctor and can’t substantiate the boosting of levels, but I enjoy this butter!

When applied to the feet, magnesium butter can:

  • Promote Relaxation: The soles of the feet are particularly receptive to transdermal absorption. Rubbing magnesium butter on your feet before bed can help reduce stress and has been reported to improve sleep quality.

  • Relieve Muscle Tension: If you're on your feet all day, magnesium can soothe soreness and support muscle recovery. This is what I see as a benefit!

  • Improve Skin Health: This recipe includes nourishing ingredients that moisturize and protect dry, cracked feet.

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the magnesium chloride flakes in the hot water, stirring until fully dissolved. Set aside to cool.

  2. In a double boiler, gently melt the shea butter and coconut oil together until fully liquefied.

  3. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly. Stir in the olive oil and essential oils, if using.

  4. Slowly pour the dissolved magnesium solution into the melted oils, stirring constantly. The mixture may separate at first—this is normal.

  5. Use a hand mixer or whisk to blend the mixture until it begins to thicken. This can take a few minutes.

  6. Transfer the magnesium butter to a glass jar or container. It will continue to solidify as it cools completely.

  7. It is important to make in small batches like this because the shelf life is fairly limited. If it starts to separate you can try to rewhip, but it is probably not going to stay mixed for long after it separates for the first time. I scaled down this recipe for the batch in the pictures.

Looks like butter!

How to Use Magnesium Butter

  • Massage a small amount onto the soles of your feet before bed or after a long day. You can also apply it to other sore areas, such as your calves or shoulders.

  • For best results, wear socks after applying the butter to lock in moisture and avoid slipping.

Final Thoughts

Taking care of your feet is about more than just pampering—it's about supporting your overall well-being. With this magnesium butter, you'll enjoy soft, healthy skin and the relaxing benefits of magnesium absorption. Try it tonight and let your feet thank you!
