One of my favorite things to do in the fall is stock up on apples—30 to 40 pounds of them, to be exact! There’s something so satisfying about spending a cool, crisp day peeling and slicing apples to make pie filling and applesauce. It’s a tradition I look forward to every year, and it always reminds me of the simple pleasures of homemade goodness.
Sweetened thawed apples in buttered baking dish.
After prepping the apples, I season them, sweeten them, and bag them up so I have a quick and easy dessert on hand. When I’m in the mood for something sweet, or if I need a dish to take to a potluck, I just grab a gallon bag of frozen apples from the freezer, thaw them in the fridge overnight, and I’m ready to bake a delicious, cozy apple crisp.
This Apple Crisp recipe has become my go-to because of how simple it is—yet it never fails to impress. The smell of apples and cinnamon baking fills the house with warmth, and as my mom would say, "This will make your tongue slap your brains out, it’s so good!"
Quick Apple Crisp Recipe
Ingredients:
1 gallon bag of frozen, sweetened apples (about 5-6 apples)
(I prepare mine with 2 tablespoons of sugar and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon before freezing them)1/4 cup cold butter, cubed
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup rolled oats
Instructions:
Grease a baking dish with butter and pour in your thawed apples.
In a separate bowl, mix the brown sugar, flour, and oats. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles pea-sized crumbs.
Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples and pat it down gently.
Bake at 350°F for 40-50 minutes, until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
Serve warm with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. Trust me, it’s the perfect pairing!

One of the things I love about this recipe is how it fits so seamlessly into my "Rustic Roots & Simple Living" philosophy. The key to keeping things simple is preparing ahead, and that’s exactly what this recipe allows you to do. When you have a stash of frozen apples in the freezer, you can whip up a dessert in no time—whether it's for a quiet night in or a last-minute dish for a potluck.
The beauty of freezing apple slices with a touch of sugar and cinnamon is that you’re halfway to a perfect dessert every time. All you have to do is make the quick topping, and the oven does the rest!

Variations to Make It Your Own
While I love this classic version, you can easily customize this apple crisp to suit your tastes:
Add some crunch: Toss in a handful of chopped pecans or walnuts into the topping for extra texture.
Warm it up: Try adding spices like nutmeg or allspice to the apples for even more warmth.
Elevate the flavor: Drizzle the finished crisp with caramel sauce or serve it with whipped cream for a decadent touch.
Potluck Hero
This Apple Crisp is a perfect dish to bring to a fall potluck. It’s warm, comforting, and smells incredible. Plus, it’s easy to scale up—just double the recipe and bake it in a larger dish for a crowd-pleaser. I’ve brought this to more than one gathering, and it’s always a hit. People often ask for the recipe because it tastes like you’ve spent hours in the kitchen, but the secret is how simple it truly is.
A Simple, Rustic Treat
At its heart, this Apple Crisp is a celebration of the simplicity that I embrace on Rustic Roots & Simple Living. Whether you’re making it for yourself or sharing it with friends and family, it’s a reminder that some of the best things in life come from a few good ingredients and a little bit of love.
So the next time you’re in the mood for something sweet, grab those frozen apples, mix up a quick topping, and let your home fill with the wonderful smell of autumn. Your taste buds will thank you!
